Eye-opening BioEYES

STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education at the primary and secondary school level is fundamental in developing critical thinking skills in early life and cultivating a passion for science. A robust and engaging STEM education can not only foster the next generation of brilliant minds to solve some of life’s biggest challenges, but it can also help in addressing challenges that the field currently faces, such as diversity and inclusion.

This is why BioEYES Australia was developed. BioEYES Australia is an award-winning, innovative, hands-on program that teaches primary and secondary students about science. A collaborative initiative between the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) and the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI), BioEYES covers diverse topics including life cycles, genetics, physiology and ethics. Regularly booked 12 months in advance and servicing approximately 38 schools and 1500-2000 students annually, BioEYES has been shown to have numerous benefits including upskilling teachers and inspiring students to pursue science careers.

Last week, in an event organised by Rotary Melbourne, the BioEYES team, including Associated Professor Sharon Flecknoe, Laura Reid and Dr Renee Rogers, talked about the hands-on experience and how the program ignites curiosity, aligning with the Victorian curriculum while fostering a love for STEM. With students studying the zebrafish during the week-long BioEYES program, ARMI’s Director of Research Professor Peter Currie was on hand to provide his expert insight and demonstrate his enthusiasm for the innovative education initiative.

ARMI is proud to be a part of such an important and inspiring program, and derive a deep feeling of satisfaction from supporting the incredible BioEYES team. As such, it is particularly pleasing to see BioEYES Australia recognised as a finalist at the 2023 Engagement Australia Excellence Awards.

Thank you to Rotary Melbourne and the BioEYES team!
